Pilates
Pilates is an exercise process which creates an internal physical transformation and integration of mind and body. Pilates follows principles and philosophy in the method of exercise that are tailored to the client’s particular needs body type weakness and strengths. Pilates as a way of life will create the best possible wellness in mind body soul and spirit. The quality of exercise is encouraged through centring of the body on the movement rather than mindless repetitions. Precise control alignment and flow of movement help us avoid strain and pain by focusing our attention to detail and getting the maximum benefit out of our every move. The awareness of our breath further assists with focusing the mind and use the centre to increase oxygen intake. All which can only be achieved through commitment to the method.

Original Principles of Pilates
  • Concentration:  To do movements properly you must focus into movements to make more refined, intense and effective.  You must concentrate on what you are doing, what we refer to as the 'mind body connection'.
  • Control:  Concentration is necessary in order to effectively control the movements and ensure that all movements are executed with focus, flow, precision and energy.  It is important to control the entire body, and think about the position of your fingers as well as the large movements of your limbs.  The mind and body create the movement.
  • Centring:  All work must rotate around the control from the core of the body, and focus of the mind.
  • Precision:  Concentrate on executing movements correctly with control to refine and perfect and create efficient flowing movement.
  • Flowing Movement:  Energy and focus keep movements flowing from one to another, creating continuous control.
  • Breathing:  Inhale and exhale to your full capacity with every movement and use the breath to assist, challenge, release and energise the body.
Contemporary Additional Principles
  • Alignment:  Concentrate on balancing the mind and body through precise movement.  Correct alignment will create efficient movement.
  • Commitment:  Consistency and dedication to making change and progression underpins the execution of the principles.
In summary, the quality of movement is emphasized and encouraged through centring the body and concentrating on the movement rather than mindless repetition.  Precision, control, alignment and flowing movement help us avoid strain or pain by focusing our attention to detail and getting the maximum benefit out of every move.  An awareness of the breath helps to focus mind and use the centre to increase oxygen intake.  All of which can only be achieved through commitment to the method.
