1. Is Bowen Therapy a massage?
Bowen Therapy is NOT a massage but it is a type of bodywork. Bowen Therapy is gentler and more precise than massage. Bowen moves stimulate the body's own innate healing potential, allowing for a very powerful response. A Bowen practitioner starts this process but the body does the rest. In Bowen therapy there is no kneading or massaging involved.
2. Can I use Bowen with other therapies?
Whilst undertaking Bowen treatment, you may continue to undergo any non-manual treatment.
A single Bowen session can initiate a plethora of beneficial changes that continue for several days post treatment. Undergoing other manipulative therapies simultaneously during this time can interrupt this process and undermine the overall effectiveness of the Bowen work. It is therefore recommended that the client wait a week after completing Bowen work before commencing any other manual therapy.
3.Can I continue my medication and allopathy treatment together with the Bowen treatment plan?
Yes, Bowen is a complimentary therapy and you should continue with your other treatment as normal. However after surgery and intensive treatment like Chemotherapy/ Radiation, it is advisable to resume Bowen treatment after an appropriate rest break. Your therapist can discuss this with you in detail.
4. What can I expect during a typical Bowen Session?
Typically the first session will be longer than the others as the therapist will take down your health history previous treatments, lifestyle, exercise and diet. This enables us to tailor the treatment plan to your specification. You will be then asked to lie-down on a treatment table to receive the treatment (for those who are unable to lie-down, the treatment can be provided whilst sitting or standing too!). It is important that silence is maintained through the session to unable to the brain and body to relax and facilitate the messages being provided to the body. The therapist will then apply a series of precise gentle, non-invasive ‘moves’ to various parts of your body according to the treatment plan. The therapist will allow for pauses between moves at regular intervals, allowing the body to assimilate the messages received.
5. What do I wear for the session?
Please wear lose and light clothing allowing the therapist to work on the body as comfortably as possible. Please do not wear thick clothing ( like jeans and jackets) or slippery material ( like silk). Your body will be covered with towels to keep your comfortable during the sessions. Wear comfortable elastic shorts with a lose vest.
6. How much time to allow for a session?
Allow 1.5 hours for the first session or single session. Following sessions may take from 20 mins to 1.5 hours, depending on your body and treatment plan.
7. How many sessions will I need?
Often people start getting results after the first session itself. Three sessions are recommended to address most issues. For some chronic conditions 6 sessions may be required others may require ongoing long-term sessions. With that said, it is highly beneficial to continue Bowen on a regular basis (every 4 to 8 weeks) to maintain optimal health and well-being.
8. What is the interval between each session?
During the treatment plan, sessions should be scheduled to ideally take place approximately 5-10 days apart. Once the treatment plan is complete, it is recommended to undergo a ‘maintenance’ session every 4-8 weeks.
9. How safe is it?
Bowen is safe for all ages from new born babies through to elderly people. The technique used is a gentle level of touch and is considered one of the safest therapies. There are only a small group of people for whom additional caution must be observed, during some Bowen treatments.
